O''Shea strike puts Man United in charge against Arsenal

MANCHESTER (Reuters) - Holders Manchester United seized the initiative in their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal with a 1-0 win in the first leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Defender John O''Shea thumped United into the lead after 17 minutes but Alex Ferguson''s team failed to finish off their Premier League rivals despite a string of chances.
Cristiano Ronaldo sent a dipping drive against the crossbar midway through the second half and substitute Ryan Giggs, making his 800th appearance for the club, had the ball in the net but was ruled offside as United piled on the pressure.
Arsenal spent most of the night defending but did have a late chance to score a precious away goal when Nicklas Bendtner headed over the crossbar from close range.
