Italian football chief questions Beckham signing

AFP - The president of the Italian Football Federation (Figc), Giancarlo Abete, on Friday questioned AC Milan''s decision to sign former England captain David Beckham.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder, 33, has spent the last 18 months playing for Los Angeles Galaxy in the American MLS.

And Abete is not sure how Beckham would fit into Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti''s team.

"Big personalities always bring a lot of attention with them and given that football is about technique, athleticism, positive communication, Beckham is undoubtedly a player who incorporates all those positive qualities," said Abete.

"He''s a big character in the football world but right now it would be strange for Ancelotti to view him as something extra in a great team full of champions such as Milan."

Milan revealed on Wednesday that they were in advanced negotiations with Beckham''s agent with regard to bringing the player to Milan during the January transfer window.

Milan''s vice-president Adriano Galliani expressed his conviction that Beckham would join Milan for several months during the MLS off season but no deal has as yet been finalised.

Beckham''s expected move to Milan is being prompted by his aim to maintain match fitness so he can remain in Fabio Capello''s England plans and become his country''s most-capped outfield player.

The midfielder currently has 107 caps, just one short of Bobby Moore''s mark of 108 appearances, but knows he will not be considered by Capello during Galaxy''s four-month break.
